The Plant-Based Diet

If you haven’t been doing a lot of research on your own on the topic of nutrition then you may be wondering why I advocate we adopt a plant-based diet. Afterall, that’s not the information you are being provided by mainstream media. Well, sadly most of what you see even from actual doctors are influenced by big business, such as the meat, dairy, and pharmaceutical industries.

Money talks and unfortunately there isn’t any money in telling people to eat carrots, broccoli, and kale. Nutrition has become a financial transaction serving everyone but you the consumer. People in our society are sicker and more overweight than ever and they have become addicted to the chemical substances found in many processed foods.

By adopting a whole food plant-based diet you can expect to lose weight, gain energy and age gracefully. I don’t count calories and don’t want you to either, rather I recommend you count colors by eating the rainbow. Each beautiful color in fruits and vegetables contains different phytonutrients from antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and all of them have specific benefits for your body. In addition to the abundance of phytonutrients found in produce, they all also contain a very important macronutrient in them and that is fiber. Fiber is absolutely necessary for proper elimination and without it we become constipated and create an environment in which disease can thrive. The average American consumes less than half of their daily fiber needs.

In case you were wondering, animal products do not contain phytonutrients or fiber and both are critical for optimal health. In addition to these key components, plants also contain adequate amounts of fats, carbohydrates, and protein on their own. Yes, I said it, plants have protein and enough of it too. Contrary to popular belief, it is not healthy for us to be taking in the loads of protein that you see being recommended in mainstream media. The average female only needs about 50 grams a day while the average male only needs about 60 grams per day. If you are interested in putting on muscle you can go up 15 to 20 grams but you don’t need more than that. In fact, too much protein will tax your organs and cause you to store fat. The preferred fuel source for your body has always been and will always be carbohydrates. However, I don’t mean simple carbohydrates from white bread, cookies, and cereal. I’m referring to carbohydrates from plants such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. I also recommend eating nuts and seeds daily in addition to incorporating herbs and juices when possible.
